Art-nouveau style backpiece. A small existing lower-back tattoo was designed in to form a center link in the subjects belt. A pacific giant octopus. The ring was a personal element, to be central but not the primary focus. A reproduction of the famous keyhole pinup painting by the legendary artist Gil Elvgren. A small, darkened scar was camouflaged into the top edge of the tattoo. 2 dragons fighting over a bombed out cityscape. A faded black shoulder piece was covered up to make a winding street, viewed from above. Detail from the fighting dragons piece. Detail from the fighting dragons piece. Woman, sword and snake backpiece. Lots of varying textures in this one. This sleeve incorporates the state nature symbols of Illinois, meant as an homage to his father. Large existing initials on the upper arm were “carved” into the tree trunk. A viking-themed backpiece, with multiple coverups and incorporation of existing pieces to make a single design. If this doesn't get you on the homepage of the Jimmy Buffet fan club site, I don't know what will. Cheeseburger in Paradise! Backpiece with birthstone arrowheads to signify her family members. Hawaiian-and-phoenix sleeve design, with little signs and symbols throughout to represent family and friends. Detail from Hawaiian-and-phoenix sleeve. A semi-abstract sidepiece depicting a fantastical mingling of floral, sky and water elements, designed to accent and flow with the client’s body shape. Details from the semi-abstract floral sidepiece. Just another ‘Marilyn pouring martinis over a poker game lava flow as Kermit sings the blues’ sleeve. Details from just another ‘Marilyn pouring martinis over a poker game lava flow as Kermit sings the blues’ sleeve. A bouquet of Hawaiian-based plants streams down, flowing across a breaking wave to show this persons love of surfing. This back piece incorporates a reworking of 3 existing flowers which were located on the lower back. Detail elements from the flower/wave back piece. A medieval-style gargoyle, affectionately named Rupert by his loving owner. A sister piece to the medieval gargoyle arm tattoo. A sister piece to the medieval gargoyle arm tattoo. This sleeve illustrates a banded krait having just been killed by a king cobra, one of it's natural predators. Detail elements from the banded krait /cobra sleeve. This armpiece was designed for a father that wanted to exhibit his protective devotion to his daughter. Look closely and you'll see a little more of dad in the tattoo. This sidepiece was designed to split the perspectives to show both an underwater as well as a top-surface view. The top ripples were originally outlined in white, then colored in to ensure a continuous, realistic pattern. Rendered in more illustrative style, this sleeve design is being tattooed in a manner that represents paintings in traditional Hindu manuscripts. A custom-designed backpiece illustrates the no-nonsense approach of this person's berzerking ancestors. The Viking god Odin, pictured in the clouds above, seems to approve. This piece displays the client’s devotion to his chosen profession as a forensic psychologist. The image shows ancient Greece, a PSI symbol, and a scroll stating the industry’s mantra ‘Above all do no harm’. This client assumed a pro-active role in the design of this tattoo, by providing an abundance of information about the myth of Atlantis, and its fabled demise. This kind of client involvement always helps to ensure a more multi-faceted design, and a more unique tattoo. This was the client's first tattoo. An underwater treasure scene, with a perspective view to show the rippling surface above. This piece was designed for an actual firefighter. He wanted to incorporate a more east-coast style, so the figure's uniform depicts that of a NYC fireman pictured in front of a burning brownstone, a building style indicative of the region. A selection of autopsy tools, pictured in active use. This was tattooed in a mixed black and gray with spot-color blood to add a higher contrast effect to the scene. This tattoo was created to honor the client’s father. The image illustrates the phrase ‘A lion amongst sheep, I eat while you sleep’. A different mood for a big cat, this scene depicts a peaceful tiger lounging in a field of exotic foliage. This was an add-on to the rose pictured in the lower right-hand area. An illustration of the Great Green Macaw, a critically endangered parrot species. Currently, there are less than 200 couples of this bird remaining in the wild. This parrot is captured mid-flight, with an implied sky texture to give the bird some extra loft. This is a stylized image of a clipper ship, illustrated to show a happy optimistic mood as the ship returns with a hearty bounty and fair winds. This side piece was done in a couple stages. First the top cherry blossoms were tattooed, then the rest was added some time later when the client wanted to enlarge the piece. This piece illustrates the life span of the lily- from new sprouts, to full-bloom, to withering. Realistic shadows were incorporated to add more overall depth to the piece. A different take on the pet portrait: the client supplied two pictures of her cats, and an image of each face was superimposed into a butterfly's wings. A brightly-colored butterfly, tattooed with crisp edges for an ornamental feel. A highly-detailed recreation of the famous Rene Lalique masterpiece. Due to the intricacy of this design, the tattoo was done in multiple sessions. First, the primary outline was applied. Then, after an initial healing period, the shading and color. This approach helped ensure minimal trauma to the skin, and a healed tattoo that retained all the precision of the original design. This tattoo is one of many images being depicted on the client's arm from the Sandman graphic novels. This particular image was a recreation of a shadowbox photo done by the renowned artist, Dave McKean. This work-in-progress will ultimately make up a 3/4 sleeve tattoo. This was a custom-designed sidepiece. It depicts a futuristic, anime-inspired biker girl, taking a break to pose with a brightly-lit backdrop of Akihabara Electric Town in Tokyo. This client wanted a tattoo that was as bright as possible. To aid in the design, he brought in an illustration of a style he liked, and an image of his vintage VW bus and surfboards were then added to the piece. This is a section of a sleeve-in-progress, showcasing an array of real-world planets mixed with elements from a galaxy far, far away. Close attention to detail has been observed, to avoid any potentially violent arguments at upcoming conventions. This upper arm piece depicts a favorite vintage robot figure, destroying an unsuspecting urban center. Note the terrified subway riders below. A smaller, existing tattoo was covered with a new, larger gargoyle motif. By designing the new piece to work with the lines of the original tattoo, the new piece will be more successful in providing effective long-term coverage, and in avoiding visible ‘creep-through’ of the original tattoo. A large circuit board sidepiece, intertwined with metallic accents to add variety and depth. This was the clients first tattoo, and he wisely had the piece rendered large enough to allow for the required detail. This client wanted a bold, smooth shape to fit her body, but also wanted a design with an extremely detailed look... and she was really into circuit boards. With this piece, she got all three wishes. This spinal backpiece commingles a number of individual elements, signifying different types of symbolic, chakra-type designs the client had provided. This piece includes a custom-designed celtic style wrap-around motif, as well as realistic illustrative elements that encompass and flow down the length of the client's arm. This lower backpiece put a number of natural elements together for one harmonious tattoo. Top and bottom framing gives a more graphic, banded look to this natural flower scene. A reproduction of the famous Raphael painting, tattooed in a classical fashion. The vignette edge gives the design a more delicate appearance- as in an antique cameo. For years, this person had lived with a tattoo she hated. Then she tried having it removed with a dermal abrasion process, which left a deep scar. This floral-designed piece not only covered up the old tattoo, but also hid the textured appearance of the scarring.
